Out of the Boxes
First begun in 2016 and still evolving today, Out of the Box explores the dynamic relationship between positive and negative space. Created with soft pastels on paper, the series is a meditation on balance and contrast, drawing the eye not only to what is present but also to what is left unsaid. The work challenges you to look deeper, to pause, and to reconsider what lies in the space between form and silence. A box is fixed, but Cheryle has imbued each with energy that is bursting from the rigid, static form, challenging the negative space.
Outside the “box”, the surrounding negative space, is just as alive, intentional, and vital as the form itself. Each piece strikes a deliberate balance between technical precision and intuitive freedom, with bold black-and-white contrasts occasionally softened by delicate layers of colour, and even the proportion of negative space gives each box a preciousness. This interplay of contrasts between light and dark, control and spontaneity, form and void gives the work both visual intensity and emotional depth. Cheryle invites us to pause, reflect, and engage with the power of space, suggestion, and the quiet beauty found in restraint.
